INDIA'S LAST DANCING BEAR

In December 2009 a cruel tradition, almost half a millennia old, was brought to an end in India when Raju, a dancing bear, was surrendered to an animal rescue coalition. The four year old sloth bear was poached from the wild, disfigured and forced to rear up on his hind legs on the streets of India for a few rupees a time, but he is now free because... Slow Loris trade: It was hard not to wince as what was left of the canine tooth popped out of the tiny jaw. I was watching a life-saving dental procedure being performed on a recently-rescued Javan slow loris, a small primate about as endangered as scientists fear animals can be. And yet it is still regularly poached from the wild to feed the huge demand from the illegal pet trade. Read Full article



Caplin Run: To create a Jiggs dinner, take a hunk of salt beef, potatoes, carrots, parsnips and a linen pudding bag of yellow split peas for Pease pudding. Albert Stanley told me to boil the salt beef for around half an hour first, drain the water add the vegetables and peas, plus more water. The pudding bag must not touch the bottom of the pan in case it burns. Read Full article

Orangutan Rescue: There is something magical about Dr Karmele Llano Sanchez, a diminutive Basque-born vet who now works tirelessly in Indonesia. She seems to have an affinity with primates who instinctively know she is there to help. Strange considering she treats animals who’s only contact with humans has been fraught with callousness, injury and death. Read Full article


Where do icebergs go to die?: Iceberg dead ahead. It's a line that went down in history - like the ship the iceberg sank. No one knows for sure if the lookouts on RMS Titanic actually said those words, but thanks to James Cameron's film, I did inside my head as we approached an iceberg, 95 years after another ripped the heart out of the doomed liner.
